Thailand has, in practice,
four international airports, one each in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Hat
Yai. A district directly north of Bangkok known as Don Muang has been the
main hub for international air traffic in and out of Thailand since 1931.
Today, it's home to Bangkok International Airport, the busiest airport in
South-East Asia in terms of scheduled arrivals and departures. A second
airport, New Bangkok International Airport (NBIA), is intended to replace
Don Muang at Nong Ngu Hao, 20km east of Bangkok, in 2004. The national
carrier, Thai Airways International (THAI), dominates inbound and outbound
air traffic, but 80 other international airlines also fly in and out of
Bangkok.
Trains run between Singapore and Bangkok, with stops along the way in
Malaysia, before entering Thailand at Padang Besar. You can choose first or
second class sleeper accommodation, or third class (seat only). The trains
are quite comfortable and are a good way to travel. Travellers may also
enter Thailand by sea at Phuket, Krabi or Satun from Malaysia; at Ranong
from Myanmar; and at Hat Lek from Cambodia.
Travel by road to Thailand is possible from Laos via Chiang Khong, Chong Mek,
Mukdaham, Nakon Phanom, Nong Khai; Malaysia via Betong, Padang Besar, Sadao,
Sungai Kaloh; Myanmar via Mae Sai; and Cambodia via Aranya Prathet.
